2026 General and Special Elections

Overview: City Council elections are conducted on the first Saturday in May of each year. Two Council Member positions, one from the east ward and one from the west ward are up for election every year and the Mayor position runs every third year. All members of the City Council and the Mayor are elected for three-year terms and there are no term limits.

GENERAL ELECTION on May 2, 2026  

The next General Election will be on Saturday, May 2, 2026 at City Hall. Filing for a place on the ballot is set by State statute and will run from January 14 - February 13, 2026. Find additional election-related dates and information at https://www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/index.shtml (posted in accordance with TX. Legis. H.B. 305, effective September 1, 2019). This election will be for one Council Member for the East Ward and one Council Member for the West Ward. SPECIAL ELECTION on May 2, 2026

A Special Election will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2026 at City Hall. This election will be for proposed charter amendments. To view the amendments click the link.

VOTING HOURS AND LOCATION
Early voting and election day voting will be held at Rockdale City Hall, 505 W. Cameron Ave, Rockdale, TX 76567. Please use the back entrance of City Hall into the council chambers. Hours for early voting on April 20th to 28th are 8:00am to 5:00pm. Election Day hours on May 2nd are from 7:00am to 7:00pm.

Filing requirements and candidate qualifications are per state statute, available at https://www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/candidates/guide/2020/index.shtml, and those may be viewed on this page.
  
Per the Sec. of State's CSO-3449 Advisory of August 3, 2020, candidate applications may be filed:
-  in person, with the City Secretary's office at City Hall; 
by mail; an application submitted by mail is considered to be filed at the time of its receipt by the appropriate filing authority. (Secs. 143.007(b); 144.005(b)); or
- by fax or email - "A signed, sworn, scanned candidate application (and petition, if applicable) may be submitted by fax or email if there is no filing fee [the City of Rockdale does not require a filing fee]. Please be advised that an application must be notarized prior to filing via fax or email."

QUALIFICATIONS FOR OFFICE:  Per the City Charter, Article III City Council, Section 3.02 Qualifications.  On the day prior to the date of the scheduled election to be held for such office, the mayor and councilmembers shall: (i) be at least twenty-one (21) years of age; (ii) be citizens of the United States; (iii) be qualified voters of the city; (iv) have been residents of the State of Texas for at least twelve consecutive months; (v) have been residents of the city and the district for which they seek election, or an area having been annexed into the city and/or the district, for at least twelve (12) consecutive months; (vi) not be delinquent on any indebtedness to the city; and (vii) meet the other qualifications for eligibility set forth in the Texas Election Code. No city employee shall be eligible to file for election as a member of the council. Also, no candidate for or member of the council shall hold any other elective public office.
